Abstract

A knowledge of the specific characteristics of the English lexical system will be of great value to students learning English as a foreign language or a second language. These lexical characteristics are of two types : those related to the form of words and those related to meaning categories.
The existence of cognate vocabulary, that is, words that have similar forms and similar meaning in two or more languages, may be an advantage to some students learning English. English contains many words that are similar in form to those in Erench, Italian and Spanish as well as to those in Dutch, German and other Germanic languages.
Students should be exposed to the vocabulary needed to express the ideas they want to communicate. The vocabulary items should not be strictly limited, nor should vocabulary acquisition be stressed to the exclusion of other parts of the language system.
Sometimes language speakers have a desire to have new words to express new things and ideas, therefore they borrow words from other languages and make new words by word - formation. The chief processes of English word - formation are compounding, derivation, back - formation, shortening, root-creation, functional shift (conversion), blending, acronymy, words from proper name, folk etymology, reduplication and metanalysis.
This thesis is an attempt to investigate and analysis compound words to help those who study English as a foreign language or a second language to learn E-nglish words, It is helpful to investigate many English compound words.
A compound is a lexical unit consisting of tvw or more full morphemes. Although languages differ greatly in the number of compounds in the lexicon, English is very rich in them. To name just a few, we may cite textbook, wasteland, gra-
ndstand etc.
